This 2.1 speaker set pumps out impressive sound considering how light the speakers are, but the sound is not as good as some more expensive 2.0 speaker sets that lack a subwoofer. If I had to choose between this compact 3 piece set and a slightly more expensive 2 piece set, I would definitely go for something like the Klipsch 2.0 speakers, or the Bose Companion II speakers, which are heavier and can produce a more substantial sound.
From the moment I opened the box and took out the speakers and subwoofer, I was wary. Most subwoofers alone are larger than the box the whole set came in. When I held the speakers, I could barely feel them in my hands, they were so light. I was doubtful the set could produce a full, rich sound.
And while the sound can be pumped up pretty loud on these, it lacks richness in the middle frequencies. Pop music sounds good because it’s all upper and lower frequencies, but piano-centric classical music and choral/opera (my favorites) sound somewhat hollow.
The volume knob on the little control box is convenient (although placement is somewhat constrained by the abundance of wires). But there is no separate controller for the subwoofer, so you can’t control the level of bass unless you go through your software EQ. This can make it somewhat unpleasant to listen to spoken word podcasts where the sound is too boomy.
That said, the sound is much fuller than many other similarly light speakers, so I guess if you are looking for a lightweight, compact set that, you will be happy with these. I set them up with my laptop last week to play at a party I was having, and the music was definitely loud enough and room filling. But given the alternatives, I recommend you pay a little more and get a good 2-speaker solution.

The sound is great, very loud, very clear, we use it primarily for movies but they’re good enough to use for music as well.
The convenience is where it shines, it has a little wired module, like an old wired remote, with power and volume controls, and most important, a headphone jack, so that if you use headphones with it you have plenty of room to move your head without yanking on the wires.
We like being able to control volume and power remotely, and we really like the sound, and the ease of set up. When we’re ready to watch a movie, even the youngest of the kids can get the speaker system out and hook it up.
It’s a nice system, when combined with our projector, screen, and laptop we have a very nice home theater system that’s also very portable and doesn’t take up much space in our home. We don’t sacrifice a bit of quality and our home theater is always ready to go in any room of the house, or even outdoors or on trips. The size, versatility and quality of these speakers is a key component in that.

The Logitech Z313 2.1 – 2 satellite speakers and sub-woofer produced fair sound. Sometimes the sound was very good and other times not so good. Let me explain. I have the Logitech X-540 5.1 and I love it. The sound is incredibly solid and catch practically all the sounds to produce a rich environment for my PC games on my desktop. The sound isn’t bad on the Z313 but there isn’t a mid range which bothers me. The bass produced good sound as long as I didn’t turn it up high. I normally wouldn’t turn it up on high anyway, so in that department the bass is OK for me. When I turned it up on high the sound starts to disintegrate with hisses. The high treble sounds were good at normal and even seemingly better than my X-540, but again as I turned the volume progressively higher, the sound quality suffers. The sound also depended on what I had the Z313 hooked to as well.
Let me first start by unwrapping the Z313. It took me about 10 minutes to get it out of all the plastic wrap. The tape was wound so tightly around the plastic, (that was on the wires), the only way to get them off was by scissors. Yikes, wires and scissors don’t mix! I would suggest Logitech switch from tape to an easy twist tie or something easier to get the plastic off. I had to be extra careful getting the tape off. When I finally got the tape and plastic off, the system looked good. It wasn’t as nice looking as my X-540 but it wasn’t cheesy looking. I like the black color. Black just looks cool.
I then hooked up the Z313 to my Sony Mp3 player docking station. The sound was fair but nothing fantastic. I think this was because of Z313 missing the mid range sound. It was still acceptable. In fairness, my Mp3 player doesn’t have loads of choices for the equalizer, so it may be the lack of not having the needed balance to fix the sound. Still due to the lack of mid range on the Z313, a good equalizer program is needed. So for the Mp3 player, the sound was OK.
Next I plugged the Z313 into my full size Casio keyboard which plays well with it’s own speakers, but the volume isn’t the best. I plugged the Z313 in with an adapter and the sound was incredibly good. On the keyboard set to piano with the Z313, it sounded like well, a true piano. Each note is clear and distinct. I thought the Z313 shone bright with the keyboard.
Next I hooked the Z313 into my Toshiba laptop. Here the Z313 burns brightest. The sound was really good providing I made adjustments on my laptop. I was able to make it emit some nice sound when I played music. When I turned up the volume passed what I would normally play, the sound began to deteriorate. This wouldn’t be the system for headbangers or those who like the sound loud. The Z313 speakers sound nice but not like the X-540. For me, I plan to keep the X-540 on my desktop. It is hard to find one better for gaming than that one. Granted 70 watts, (140 watts peak power), on the X-540 and more speakers would naturally make the X-540 a better system, but the prices aren’t that far apart with the X-540 only being about [...] bucks more. The Z313 will still wonder from Casio keyboard to my laptop. I will probably look around for a Logitech higher end system for my Sony docking station.
Hooking up the speakers and sub-woofer couldn’t be easier. You plug the speakers into the sub-woofer and plug the sub-woofer into the wall. You plug the control pod wire into your desktop, laptop, etc.
About the control pod. I like the control pod. It makes it easier to turn the volume up or down, but I would like to see a remote pod without the wires as there are two wires. One to the sub-woofer and one you hook into your computer. It is kind of messy and cumbersome with two wires. I couldn’t find a place to put the control pod down to make it look nice. I just sat it down by the sub-woofer with two wires jumbled up. I like clean surfaces and a remote pod would be so much better. Something I would like to see is the pod have a control for bass and treble, because sometimes I would need more bass or treble depending on what I was doing – again because of the lack of mid range. You can plug a headphone into the pod which was OK.
I wanted to mention when I plugged the sub-woofer into the wall, it made a humming sound when I didn’t have it plugged into my computer. It hummed on all the devices I plugged it into and it sounded like the sub-woofer was always on. Since there wasn’t a power off button on the sub-woofer, I would not leave this plugged directly into the wall. Turning the power off from the control pod makes no difference, the hum is still there. I have a power circuit breaker so I turn it off via this, but I wouldn’t plug the sub-woofer straight to the wall and leave it. It might just be the system I got though, so I can’t say it will do this for everyone but I did want to mention it.
Overall, I would rate it more of a 3 1/2, but since Amazon doesn’t have 1/2 stars I have got to go with 3. I found the Logitech Z313 a fair system, and for around [...] bucks it is a good choice for someone wanting normal volume for their laptop. If you do any gaming on a desktop, or a laptop, I would go with a higher end Logitech such as the X-540. The X-540 is about [...] bucks more than the Z313, and the X-540 comes with 70 watts, (140 watts peak), and more speakers – 5.1. I still like the higher end Logitech speaker systems and will continue to buy the Logitech higher end speaker systems.

Logitech delivers what it promises, and the speakers are easy to install, adaptable to one’s computer or CD/DVD player, and simple to operate. However, I did not find the sound quality to be exceptional. It was on a par with my older speakers (which also are in the ‘economical’ category). Overall, I would rate this item as average.

I don’t know why these speakers are getting such good reviews on here. The sound quality can’t stand up to any kind of volume. They sound fine at low volume, but crank it up just a little and the sound of static comes rushing in, and the subwoofer just rattles. I’m thinking they’ll be blown out in a matter of months if I don’t replace them soon. And what’s up with this stupid dongle that has the volume and power control on it? It doesn’t have any weight, and it’s not detachable, so unless you tape it to your desk, the weight of the cords just pull it to the floor. I have no idea what the idea was there.
Worst Logitech product I’ve ever purchased.
